FAQ – Weddings Questions

Can I get a list of your packages?

Of course. Just to calrify, I don’t have packages, per se, but a flat fee ($1500) for shooting the wedding and after the wedding we schedule an ordering session and you can select from my collection, a la carte items or create a custom package to fit your needs. If you know what you want you can pre-pay before the ordering session, order what you need at the ordering session and any remainder will be refunded to you. Just shoot me an email and I can send you a Pricing Schedule so you can estimate your budget.

Do you travel?

Yes!

I travel all over the Washington DC area, out of state, and even out of country for weddings. Please, don’t hesitate to ask Travel fees apply depending on where the wedding will be. We can chat about the specifics though for you. Just send me a note!

Do you have a preference on when we take our bride/groom portraits on the wedding day?

I’m torn about this.

Generally, I recommend brides and grooms take their photos BEFORE the wedding using a first look set-up to see each other for the first time. Logistically this allows for the couple to enjoy time with thier family, friends and guests without having the pressure to fit formals and portraits in between the ceremony and reception. This will allow us more time and give us an opportunity to get the BEST pictures possible. I know it breaks tradition… but it does make it a lot less stressful for you after the wedding has already started.

On the other hand, there can be a powerful moment whent the bride and groom see each other for the first time as the bride walks down the isle. It’s humbling and inspiring to see the emotion that can resonate when that moment transforms from anticipation to fufillment. This is one tradition that I will alway defer to my couples as to how they want to handle. There are pros and cons to either approach and to do it or not to do it is really should be left to the couple to decide. I’m fine with whatever works best for the couple.

Do you have the photos available on disc?

We provide the print-resolution digital files (the digital equivalent of negatives). We do retain the copyright to the images and the right to use them for promotional purposes, competition, etc. You will have permission to make unlimited personal reproductions and copies for your friends and families.

How long does it take to see or get my wedding photos?
Standard turn around time is 4 weeks to see ALL of your photos online. But, you will get to see a preview up on the blog within a week.

What do I need to do if I want to book you?
Contact me for a meeting. Once we chat and get to know each other, I will need a returned contract along with a deposit of $500. This will retain your date. Half (50%)of the oustanding balance is due sixty (60) days before event date and the remainder is due thirty (30) days before the event.
How long do I have to order prints or products?
Brides and Grooms have up to one year to order from the proofing site.

How does the album process work?
You have up to six months after the event to create and order your album. You do get to preview your album design and communicate the changes over two rounds of changes before a change-fee is assessed. Once you approve the layout, we will help you choose your album cover style, color, imprinting, and other small details. It usually takes about 4-6 weeks to receive your album after final approval.

How many pictures will we get?
The number of photographs taken depends on the amount of details, time, and people at your wedding. A conservative estimate around 100 images per hour of coverage.

Do you have an assistant? Another photographer?
I normally prefer to work alone but a second photographer is available if you’d like to add it to your package. As for assistants, depending on the demands of the event I may bring one along but again, I prefer to work alone.

Are you insured?
Yes we are. If you need a copy of insurance for your venue, just let us know! We will be happy to take care of that for you.

Do you come to the rehearsal?
Rehearsal dinner coverage is available if you’d like to add it to your package; otherwise we do not attend the rehearsals.

Do we need to feed you at the reception?
It would be really lovely if you did. It doesn’t have to be the same as your sit-down meal (many caterers offer “vendor meals” as an add-on option). We work better with food in our tummies… for sure. Oh.. and a piece of of wedding cake is in the contract!!
Any other questions? Just send me an email!

Hacked…:(

This past weekend, all of my web sites were compromised by Hackers. This isn’t the first time that this has happened to me but it’s frustrating to have to deal with getting things up and running again as additional work to my day to day operations of a small business.

The Hackers took advantage of a common vulnerability in the back end of type of sites l use. Working with my hosting company, we were able to get the sites up and running fairly quickly but spent the last couple of days scrubbing the site to look for other hacks to try to get rid of them.

The good news is that we think we got it all and the site is up and running. The bad news is that I’ll have to repopulate my entire site which will take some time.

I’m looking at it as an opportunity to go through my work for the past couple of years to see what I can re-blog and update my images in my portfolio. So please check back often as I update the site with new work and revisit the older stuff.

Culpepper Wedding Photographer – Anastasia Bridal Portrait

Culpepper, Virgina Weddings

This image is from my June 10, 2010 wedding for Anastasia and James in Culpepper, Virgina.

St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church

St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church is a beautiful historical building in downtown Culpepper. This was taken at a hall adjacent to the main building. I loved the symmetry of the stain glass windows and the light of the afternoon backlit her perfectly.

FAQ: Equipment – Cameras & Lenes

I often get asked what gear do I shoot with. I know where this question is headed.

Some are just curious what tools you use and some are under the misguided impression that gear makes the Photographer.

Cameras are just tools.

I would love the challenge of shooting an entire wedding with a point and shoot camera. The cameras are so good now that 90% of the time you can get a great shot in auto mode.  It’s my specific shooting needs that dictate my gear choices so the listing below is not for everyone.

Camera:
Canon 5D
Canon 50D

Lenses:
primes
28 1.8
50 1.4
85 1.8
100 2.8 macro

telephoto
24-70 2.8 L
70-200 2.8L
75-300 4.5-5.6

Crop Factor Explained

When we think of prints we often think of the sizes that frames have typically come in the popular print size (e.g. 4×6, 5×7, 8×10, 11×14 and 16×20). I assume most of these sizes are legacy from the film days, especially when medium format cameras were popular with most photographers and studios. The frame companies have been slow in evolving their offerings to to the format that’s most prevalent to today’s digital cameras which the vast majority capture at 3:2 ratio (Olympus digital cameras are a noted exception, they capture at a 3:4 ratio).  As a result we have cropping out part of the image in order to fit it in the popular frame sizes that are available.

Crop factor can be confusing but I’ll do my best to explain it you you. Sorry for the impromptu math seminar :) .

My cameras capture images at a 3:2 or 2:3 ratio. Meaning that if the longer side is divisible by 3 the shorter side is divisible by 2. So an uncropped image out of my camera (and other 35mm based cameras) comes in 6×4, 9×6, 12×8, 15×10, 18×12, 24×16, 30×20, and 45×30.

If you order any variation of this ratio, the image need to be cropped. So an 8×10 (a 4:5 ratio) is basically a crop of an 8×12 (2:3) meaning that a full 2” will be cropped off the image. This is why when you see some of your group images there seems to be a lot of space around- that’s leaving room for the different size requests. My on-line shopping cart does show you the crop before you place the image in your cart so you can see the effect of the different crop sizes.

Enagement Sessions – What to Wear

Here is guidelines for how to dress for an engagement photo session:
  • Do ‘you’! Look casual and fun and not too formal, while wearing something that really is very ‘you’.
  • It’s important to wear clothing that you can sit, stand and walk comfortably in because you will be moving around a lot for a variety of different photographs. Also, try to wear something you would not mind getting a little dirty (like jeans or khakis).
  • Wearing clothes that match your partner’s (for example you both wearing khaki bottoms and a white shirt) often does not work well for this kind of shoot. That kind of matching works better for family portrait session where that kind of dress connotes one unit instead of two personalities in love.
  • You do want to stick to the same color family or complementary tones and keep in mind that darker colors are most slimming on women.
  • Try to avoid busy patterns, you do not want to wear something that will compete with your face for attention in the  images.
  • It’s also important to incorporate the same level of formality into your outfits – meaning one person should not look like they are going to the beach and the other to an office meeting!

Hello world!

Excuse my dust! :)

I’ve decided to move to a blog-based format. This will allow me to update my site with my latest work and provide me an opportunity to let my clients and fans more easily follow my wedding and portrait work.

Over the coming months I will be back blogging my weddings and portraits over the past couple of years so that you can get a sense of my development as a Photographer.

I hope you enjoy the site.  If you have suggestions for what would be helpful for you to see on this site, I’d be happy to here them!
